Ryan Mackin – Head Coach/Manager of Ground Control Owings Mills

Ryan Mackin is a homegrown Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Purple Belt, as well as a Professional MMA and Muay Thai Competitor. Ryan grew up in Columbia, Maryland where he was a State Wrestling Champion and NHSCA All-American in 2001. He later went on to be part of Gloucester College’s National Championship team in Sewell, NJ. He then began training MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at age 23, under John Rallo (Renzo Gracie Black Belt), as part of the very successful Ground Control Academy in Baltimore. As an amateur, Ryan was undefeated in 11 fights with only 3 of them going the distance. In 2009, Ryan did his first of two trips to Bangkok, Thailand where he trained and competed Muay Thai Kickboxing. Training at the World Famous Jitti Gym, Ryan found himself learning and training with several World Champions including Rajasak Sor Vorapin, Watcharachai Kaewsamrit, and Liam Harrison. The several months spent in Bangkok was highlighted when he competed at the World Famous Lumphinee Stadium, which would be the equivalent to boxing at Madison Square Garden or the MGM Grand.

Ryan had his first Professional MMA Fight at the original Shogun Fights in October of 2009, winning by Submission in the 2nd Round. He went on to have 6 Professional MMA Fights before injuries caused a temporary stop to his career in 2012. It was around that time that Ryan took over as Head Coach of Ground Control’s Owings Mills location. Over the last few years, he has been fortunate enough to be mentored by his original coach John Rallo, as well as Ricardo Almeida Black Belt Rob Scheier (Precision BJJ/King of Prussia, PA). Scheier was Mackin’s head cornerman during his time as a Professional Fighter. Due to his love for competition, Ryan remains very active on the Jiu-Jitsu circuit competing and winning several titles on the local circuit (NAGA, Grapplersquest, US Grappling) and also has two international medals to his credit (Bronze Medals at the IBJJF World Masters Championships and the IBJJF European Open). He is likely to be promoted to Brown Belt before his next international competition.

Ryan has made it clear that he intends to step back into the cage in the future, however his primary focus is building the team at Ground Control Owings Mills. Since taking the role of Head Coach has helped produce 9 IBJJF International Medalists, 2 Professional MMA Fighters, and several amateur titles on the local MMA and Muay Thai Circuit. Often referred to around the gym as “Teach,” Ryan currently teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Gi and No Gi), Muay Thai, Takedowns, and Kids Classes throughout the week. He also was a High School Wrestling Coach at Hammond High (Columbia, MD) for 12 years where he led the team to 2 State Dual Meet Championships as well as dozens of Individual State Champions and Place winners. Ryan is about to begin his first season as wrestling coach of Owings Mills High School, which remains one of the largest dynasties in Maryland Wrestling History. Ryan currently lives in Timonium with his fiance Gina and their puppy, Charlie, a 5-month old Miniature Dashaund.
